The medicine bag is a leather bag made out of elk skin; in the bag are three thing inside. Martin is chosen to receive the medicine bag because he is the oldest male child in his family. He is also chosen because it is a tradition on the Sioux Indian to pass on the medicine bag to the oldest male child. In side the bag was a piece of iron cattle, a pebble from the bottle and also a sacred sage. All these objects came from a voyage. That a Sioux Indian has right after they receive their bag. In the voyage the Indian has to fast until they get a vision.
The medicine bag is important to the Sioux because it symbolizes a boy turning into a man. The medicine bag has been handed down for many generations. Although martin is not 100% Sioux Indian it is important for his grandfather to continue the generation of passing down the medicine bag to the oldest male child of the family.
