Mate Guarding

Evolutionary psychologists use "mate guarding," to explain human feelings of jealously, attraction, and behaviors in romantic relationships. In this paper, I will focus on jealously.

"Mate guarding," is a technique use by humans to make certain you maintain access to your mate, to prevent anyone from stealing your mate, or to prohibit your mate from becoming unhappy and leaving (Buss, 2007:1). "Mate guarding," develop for two main reasons. To prevent "mate poachers," or someone who was attempting to lure your mate from their existing relationship for a short or long term affair, and to prohibit mates from becoming interested in other partners (Buss, 2007:1-2).

signs of infidelity, or signals that suggested a partner was unhappy with their current relationship (Buss, 2007:3). Once jealously was activated, a variety of steps were taken to evaluate the seriousness of the threat as well as measures for preventing the threat from continuing (Buss, 2007:3). These measures could result in vigilance to violent behavior (buying presents, checking up on the mate, hiding their mates, and putting other people down) or more subtle actions such as making oneself more attractive and flirting with other mates (Buss, 2007:3).

Studies have predicted that males were more upset than females when it came to sexual encounters. Rather, females were more concerned with the emotional aspect (2nd lecture, 9/8/09). Men were more likely to divorce if they suspected a woman had a sexual encounter with another partner (Buss, 2007:4).
