According to Walt Whitman, a democratic country needs its own original literature to have an identity of its own. In Leaves of Grass and Democratic Vistas, Whitman tried to spread the idea of democracy, equality, and optimism and why they are extremely important in order for a state to be successful. Throughout his works, materialism was a big idea that was important to the development of Walt Whitman's idea of an American democracy.
