Matthew Brady

Matthew Brady was a famous photographer throughout the 1800s. He was born May 18th, 1822 to immigrant parents in New York. He is known as the father of photo journalism, and was the first person to photographically document the Civil War. Matthew went at his new work with enthusiasm. He was young, energetic, enterprising and industrious and devoted himself to the new craft. He was not alone in this attempt, of course, for Jeremiah Gurney, also of New York, John A. Whipple and Southworth and Hawes in Boston, Marcus Root in Philadelphia, J. H. Fitzgibbon in St. Louis, and Alexander Hesler in Chicago, all contemporaries of Brady, were aiming towards the same end. After the civil war broke out all of Mathews passion for his career was accurately displayed. Despite his fame, he felt the need to find a way to show people how bad the war really was. To do that, he decided to take photos of the war.When the Civil War began Brady was very interested in photographing it. He got Lincoln's permission and off he went. He had to hire photographers, and make a traveling dark room. He hired Alexander Gardner and Timothy O’Sullivan. They later quit because Brady put his name on their photos. Although his family and friends tried to talk him out of moving with the troops on the fields, Brady denied. He is famous for the denial of staying at home and away from the war with the quote, “I had to go. A spirit in my feet said 'Go,' and I went.” He brought other great photographers along with him, forming a group of photographers to tag along with the troops.
