McCandless’s Mindset

Many people do something radical and seemingly pointless and end up getting hurt or even dying. Most of these people are passed by as mentally unstable and not in their right mind at the time of the event. At the start of the book Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer, Chris McCandless will seem to be a parallel these people. However, as the book goes on this seems to look more and more like a false assumption. As Jon Krakauer insists, Chris McCandless “wasn’t a nutcase” or a “Sociopath,” but instead McCandless is more of a pilgrim trying to prove to himself that he could live off of primeval land without help. (Krakauer 85)

If McCandless had been shy and anti-social he would make a bad captain which was obviously not the case as it was a very successful team. The book then goes on to take accounts from many different people from his high school each being introduced as one of his friends, usually from cross country. The great number of friends and leadership positions that McCandless has during the book clearly expresses that he is very associated and not at all anti-social.
Chris McCandless has lived his whole life relying on technology and civilization for help and because of this; he wanted to prove to himself he did not need this guidance. Jon Krakauer makes it clear that one of the main underlying reasons that Chris McCandless wanted to take this journey and to step into the wild was that he wants to prove something to himself.
