The Great Depression was a time of hardship for everybody especially ranch workers. It prevented people from living the life they desired. Many people lived in poverty bartering between jobs. Eventually people, like Lennie and George, began searching for jobs in California, in fact “[t]housands flocked to California”(Fremon 75). People were in search of jobs as migrant workers for fruit and vegetable fields. When there was an opening for one man, there would be at least ten men competing for it. They were willing to work for extremely low wages, even just for food. So it was important for George and Lennie to keep their job in order to earn the money to save up for their farm. This ...

put a damper on their dream because they were unable to save up the money that they would need to purchase a farm. The downfall of America during this time made it very hard for anyone. Even those people who were upper class before the Great Depression lost almost all of their money and were having trouble surviving. Someone who was lower class, like Lennie and George, had a hard time saving the money to buy their own plot of land for a farm. George knows saving the money will be especially hard for him because “…few people have the ability or drive to fulfill them [dreams]” (Cliffs Notes 25).
Lennie is oblivious to his surroundings and has trouble remembering things. He does not realize his tremendous strength, which causes him to mistakenly overpower everything he loves. Without realizing it Lennie causes distress. This misfortune makes it hard for him and George to keep a job for an extensive period of time.
