In "Miss Brill," Katherine Mansfield describes an aging teacher who visits a public park on a weekly basis. Every Sunday afternoon, Miss Brill ventures to the park at the same time and watches the band play. On this Sunday, Miss Brill wears her old fur coat. To her, the fur coat was a long lost friend. She had not worn the coat in a long time and it gave her a sense of joy to wear it again. When she arrives at the park, Miss Brill watches the band play and studies the crowd of people. and then just walked away. Miss Brill imagined that the band knew what the ermine toque was feeling and played softly as the drum beat "The Brute! The Brute!" over and over. Her tendency to notice these things shows that she is melancholy with her own life and can find no other way to fill in her emptiness other than with the lives of other people.
A good quality Miss Brill has is her imagination. She imagines that the whole setting at the park is like a play with no audience. She feels that everyone is involved including herself. Miss Brill imagined that "they weren't only the audience, not only looking on; they were acting. Even she had a part and came every Sunday." Miss Brill is overcome with excitement when this idea comes to her mind. She felt queer, yet proud. She enjoyed thinking that she was in the play because it gave her a role, to her it was a role in life not just a role for her Sunday afternoons.
