The portrayal of women in a play is often a challenging task. In these two plays, `new woman' is a term used to describe the qualities of Hedda Gabler and Miss Julie. August Strindberg and Henrik Ibsen were both awesome dramatists of the nineteenth century, and both assumed an expansive part in the advancement of cutting edge naturalism/authenticity.
