People often explain processes and procedures to one another, and in a formal setting, we have all experienced a demonstration or a lesson by a teacher who is telling us and perhaps showing us how to do something. Lessons in class are examples of explanation, teaching the audience what each member needs to know.

Persuasion involves argument, taking one side of a controversial issue and seeking to persuade the audience to that point of view. Political speech is usually persuasive speech with the intention of changing mind about an issue or candidate. Advertising is another form of persuasive speech with the intention of getting the audience to try a product or to switch from one brand name to another.
