1. Three specific functions of speech can be characterized as narration, explanation, and persuasion. Narration can also be called informing, for it means assimilating information and then retelling it so others understand it. Human beings engage in narration all the time, telling one another what they have learned, or even speculating about issues and so conveying their thoughts to others. Many formal speeches are intended to be informative, to tell the audience about a problem, an issue, an organization, or an idea.
