Narration In Haircut And Cask Of Amontillado

The narrators in "Haircut" and "Cask of Amontillado" both put their own slant on the events as they tell them. This shows unreliable first-person narration in both stories. In "Haircut", Whitey is the narrator. He doesn't seem to be able to see through the events in the story, even though he is the one telling it. In "Cask of Amontillado", Montresor doesn't tell the whole story to Fortunato, who believes that he is going to be sampling some fine wine.

"‘I have my doubts,' I replied; ‘and I was silly enough to pay the full Amontillado price without consulting you in the matter. You were not to be found, and I was fearful of losing a bargain.'" Montresor tells Fortunato this lie to lure him into the cellar, but the reader doesn't realize his intention until later in the story when he shackles Fortunato to the wall.
Whitey is an unreliable narrator for another reason. The reader can guess by the end of the story what happened to Jim in the boat. But Whitey just doesn't see what has happened. He thinks that Jim got shot by accident. Whitey gives all the details, but can't piece together that it was no accident. "Doc examined the body and said they might as well fetch it back to town.
