that would foster assimilation of the native people into the mainstream of "idealized" American society. Here the children would learn how to speak English and not be allowed to speak the language of their tribe, they would be taught a vocation which would allow them to become useful to society, and practice farming in order to become self-sufficient. The concept of the Indian boarding school played a fundamental role in the programs designed by the United States government in support of policy to "re-train" the Indian thinking. Advocates of boarding schools argued that learning to speak only English and by providing industrial training, along with several years of isolation from family, would diminish the influence of tribalism on a new generation of American Indians.
