Unit 3 Essay: Longfellow & Cooper

Longfellow's use of the landscape created beauty and freedom within the dream of the slave as he passed away; escaping his pain and capture. Cooper used the top of the mountain with the beauty of a panoramic view of all the land around to be the highest point of freedom and heroism.
Longfellow and Cooper both demonstrate the heroism with both characters, the slave and Chingachgook's son Uncus, using the landscape to honor them both in life and death; for now they are both free. The slave's heroism is escaping the bondage of slavery though death, and Chingachgook honors his son, Uncus, death as close to the heavens, which is the sky. Hawkeye too is ...

held prisoner within America as well, loyalty to his homeland and family whom were left behind. Both characters suffered great loss and seek the same kind of peace and freedom. The slave finds his within himself, in his dreams, nature, and memories of long ago, until his dream and death become one. Hawkeye finds his freedom through nature and Chingachgook; yet makes friendships with other white men. Even though Hawkeye is able to walk the land more freely than "the slave," he two cannot cross barriers of land without being held captive.
The critical comment Longfellow directs at the America, which Hawkeye and Cora face, and Chingachgook laments on the mountaintop is:

The forests, with their myriad rogues,
Shouted of liberty;
And the Blast of the Desert cried aloud,
With a voice so wild and free,
That he stared in his sleep and smiled
