There is currently a war being fought in the northern half of Wisconsin between Nicolet Minerals Company, a subsidiary Rio Algom Mining Company, and many of the area residents and legislature. The Nicolet Minerals Company (formerly Crandon Mining Company) is planning to open a copper mine in the center of the headwaters of the Wolf River. This is causing anger, lawsuits, and raising questions of the local Menominee Indians’ treaty rights.
The proposed mine would certainly effect the environment of northern Wisconsin. Nicolet Minerals Company plans to extract fifty-five million tons of rock to retrieve two million tons of zinc-copper ore over the next twenty-eight years. The by-product ...

Many local individuals and organizations are becoming extremely angry with the mining companies. They are upset because they fear that the Wolf River and the surrounding environment will be damaged or destroyed. Authorities on the subject of damage caused by mines obviously agree. In 1988 the Natural Resources Board named the Wolf River an “outstanding resource water”. Not even ten years later, after the mining project had been proposed, American Rivers declared the Wolf River the fifth most endangered in North America (Fowler-Bowman). That is a very drastic change for just ten years.
