There are many people in the world today who oppose gay and lesbian marriage. The key to understanding this position lies in understanding why these people choose to feel the way they do. One reason for the opposition lies deep within the individual's religious beliefs. According to a study by the Pew Research Center, more than 28 percent of those questioned stated that their opposition to gay and lesbian marriage stemmed from the idea that homosexuality is "immoral, a sin, or inconsistent with biblical teachings" (2003). A third reason for the objection lays in the capitalist system its self. According to Rosemary Hennessy's book, Profit and Pleasure: Sexual Identities in Late Capitalism (2000), ideas of sexuality and sexual identity are linked to gender, race and age, and these ideas in turn are based on the capitalist system, in a Marxist way. Since the capitalist system still views the division of labor as gendered, that same society still views some subjects within those divisions unequal, such as homosexuals. Their inequality thus makes them "ineligible" for the benefits and rights of marriage (Hennessy, 2000).
