After the class sang the song a few times, Mrs. Tanner directed them to the board where she notated the different pitches present in the folk song, and the children took pride in helping her place the notes as they are supposed to go on the staff. They are already very familiar with note interrelationships, and she had them sing the pentatonic scale as practice in the song. The song also included part-singing, though for most of the song, the parts sang in unison. They then moved onto the song ‘Jesus Here Present.’ This song seemed to be much more practiced then the other one. The children displayed much excitement when the song’s name came up, and when they sang the song, they sang it more enthusiastically and confidently. The song is also pentatonic in nature, with a few areas of chromatic changing, but the children seemed to understand the song well enough to make the chromatic changes confidently and accurately.
