Obsession With the Idea of Love

Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare is one of the greatest love tragedies of all time. From the moment Romeo and Juliet fall for each other at first sight to killing themselves at the very end, they maintain their love towards each other. However, as readers begin to analyze and closely examine this famous play, they will soon realize Romeo and Juliet are never actually in true love. Romeo’s obsession on Juliet’s physical attributes, Juliet’s view on Romeo as freedom from her parents and the short period of time of the entire play all contribute to the idea that they are never in love to make important decisions on their relationship.

Also, after Romeo gets banished from Verona, he mentions yet another physical quote about Juliet : ‘’Where Juliet lives ; and every cat and dog and little mouse, every unworthy thing, live here in heaven and may look on her; but Romeo may not.’’ (3.3, 30-33). While Romeo expresses sadness (by crying) on not being able see Juliet’s physical appearance, he mentions nothing about missing Juliet’s emotional love. In addition, after the couple consummate their marriage, he states he is ready to die because he is satisfied with their relationship. Romeo says: ‘’Let me be ta’en, let me be put to death; I am content, so thou wilt have it so.’’ (3.5, 17-18). What he really means is that he doesn’t care how Juliet feels. He is only interested in exploring her physical body. So while Romeo states he loves Juliet the moment he sees her, the only love he gave is an obsession with her physical attributes.
