Oedipus' Fatal Flaw: Arrogance

Oedipus' fatal flaw is his arrogance. Because of his arrogance, he could see clearly and he refused to listen to those around him. He does not listen to Teiresias or his wife. Even when those around him try to convince to leave well enough alone, he refuses to do so.
He becomes arrogant with Teiresias' answer to his question and calls Teiresias a "wicked old man" (Sophocles I.i.118). He even accuses Teiresias for Laios' murder. Oedipus is so obsessed that when he hears the truth, he does not recognize it. Even when Teiresias says, "You yourself are the pollution of this country" (I.i.135) and "You are the murderer whom you seek" (I.i.143), Oedipus cannot comprehend what he is ...

could have avoided his fate had he not become so obsessed by finding answers. If he had not been so headstrong about finding out the truth about his past, he might have avoided the whole situation. However, he was arrogant to the point of being blind. He also thought he knew more than anyone else around him, which proved to be a terrible mistake.
