Oedipus versus Creon

John Quincy Adams, the sixth president of the United States of America, once said: “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader” (“Brainy Quotes”). In other words, when one can say that they have taken something positively useful from their leader, that is what defines an effective and successful ruler. As rulers, Oedipus displays his fear of prophecy, while Creon’s attitude illustrates his unwillingness to partake in what Tiresius says. Therefore, Creon’s and Oedipus’ ineffectiveness as leaders demonstrates that the flaws of ignorance and fear reveal that too much pride leads to the downfall of rulers.
