At the end of the passage, Sophocles uses oxymoron to present the plague that strike Thebes as "Death luxuriates in the raw, wailing miseries of Thebes". "Death" does not meant to be a luxury but misery instead since people will die. Sophocles put the word "Death" next to "luxuriates" is to effectively present us death might seem to be a luxury to people when everyone in the city is dying. Moreover, with the capitalization of "D", Sophocles effectively demonstrates the effects of "Death", to the city.

When Oedipus introduces himself at the opening scene, he says "I am Oedipus". It reveals his arrogant as he tells everyone about himself.
