Throughout history we have all heard stories of segregation and alienation. “John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men tells a tightly compressed story set during the Great Depression” (The Grapes of Wrath, Of Mice and Men, and The Pearl). Throughout this story various characters are alienated whether it is because of age, skin color, or mental capabilities. of a ten year old. When they meet new people George explains, “He strong, he can do anything you ask, but I can’t say he bright, cuz he sure ain’t bright” (Steinbeck 22). Without an explanation Lennie is treated differently than everyone else. George wants him to have the same opportunities a mentally capable person would have. Lennie is often passed over due to his apparent mental deficiencies. He often draws negative attention to himself because he doesn’t realize his own physical strength. “I wasn’t doin’ nothin’ bad with the mouse George, I was just stroking it” (Steinbeck 8). In fact, because Lennie did not realize his own strength, he killed the mouse. He never learns from his mistakes, and later kills Curley’s wife. With this act, Lennie becomes the person that absolutely no one wants to be associated with. Even George won’t be seen with him.
