The Earth is 4.5 billion years old. We split Earth's history into different parts called eras and we split the eras into smaller parts called periods. While these periods have some similarities, they are all very unique. When comparing and contrasting periods it's best to use periods from different eras as examples. There are many characteristics when comparing geological time periods. The Cretaceous period of the Mesozoic era and Ordovician period of the Paleozoic era are two periods of the geological time scale that exemplify the characteristics of their periods that we can use to compare and contrast each other.

However, over the course of the time period water temperatures did cool allowing life to continue to flourish on Earth. Organisms such as green algae and planktonic sea creatures were common throughout the period (Avildsen et al).
