One of the most evil things on this earth is "self". Some theologians have even suggested the possibility that "love of self" is actually the Satan we hate and fear. Even if this is not really true, we certainly can typecast ourselves into that role if we become too self-absorbed. A prominent character in William Shakespeare's Othello is be a perfect (or maybe not so perfect) example of what can happen to a man who lets greed and jealousy rule his actions. Iago shows us that he is a type of Satan by his behavior; he is deceptive, evil, and self-absorbed.

Roderigo that Cassio is in love with Desdemona and convinces Roderigo to murder Cassio (Iago later murders Roderigo). Iago even deceives his own wife, Emilia, convincing her to "find" Desdemona's handkerchief, given to her by Othello as a gift. He then drops it in Cassio's room and uses that as proof of Desdemona's infidelity. He later tries to kill Emilia to silence her. Not one escapes his web of deception.
What is the reason for all this deception? Pure and simple, it is evil greed and jealousy. Iago is jealous of Michael Cassio's position with Othello. He feels the position should be his and will stop at nothing to accomplish it. He is also jealous of the friendship between the two men, although he claims (to Roderigo) to hate Othello.
