Othello - Act I Summary

Act I - Scene I


1) Gives the setting - the time and place of the play. The first act takes place in Venice, the last four on the island of Cyprus. This island was subject to the republic of Venice, and was attacked by the Turks in 1570, which gives us the period of the play.

2) Iago, the villainous protagonist, reveals his nature to Roderigo and so to us; his animosity towards Othello creates an atmosphere of suspense and interest to prepare us for Othello himself.

3) We are warned from the beginning that Iago is seldom what he appears to be; everything he does is to be for his own advantage; all his words and actions have a purpose - to further his own ...

2) This scene shows Iago in a different light from that in which he has shown himself to Roderigo. Here he is the apparently loyal ancient to Othello, adapting his performance to suit the person to whom he is speaking - revealing his evil versatility.

4) We learn of Othello's good reputation with the Duke and senators who send for him when an emergency rises.

5) Through Brabantio's speech to Othello, we appreciate the unusual and courageous step which Desdemona has taken in marrying someone so far removed from her own natural environment.
