"Otherization" is quite a common practice that we can meet with in the literature of many different cultures. Nearly every society or culture had something like "the Other" although it did not have to be called precisely like that. There was always some outer group that was despised, feared, or hated. According to Jean-Francois Staszak the Other is a "member of a dominated out-group, whose identity is considered lacking and who may be subject of discrimination by the in-group." in Shakespeare's drama the "Tempest" - adapting it to the characteristics I described above - in the context of Colonialism.

The main character of the play, Prospero, is living with his daughter Miranda on a deserted, mysterious island full of nymphs and various magical spirits. Prospero practices magic and is the only ruler of an island. Magical creatures of that land serve him, as well as one indigenous inhabitant named Caliban. The character of Caliban is strongly otherized and mirrors the way in which a lot of people in Shakespeare's times seen the native people of the colonized lands.
For first, his appearance is compared to the one of a monster. All we know is that he is deformed, freckled, and when seen by other characters of a play - Stephano and Trinculo - compared to a fish. They even, speaking to him directly, call him a monster. Here it is how Stephano describes Caliban when seeing him for the first time:
