Although many people know of Ancient Greece, not many know about
how their government was run. Sure, we have all seen the columns and heard
of the great philosophers, that is often all we know of this culture.
Most of us are not aware of how these illustrious people lived their daily
lives. If you compare their society morals to ours, you may realize that
they are a lot more similar to ours then you think.
In 431 BC, Pericles gave a eulogy to honor the Athenians who had
died during the first year of the Pelopenesian War. In this speech, he
declares ‘We do not copy the laws of neighboring states’. While this may
be the way of the Greek world, our practice is very different. We, ...

In Ancient Greece, their government ‘favored the many instead of
the few’. We, too, have this philosophy. Our government is a democracy,
which is the same system that the Greeks employed. A democracy benefits
the country as a whole by allowing everyone to have an equal vote, as
opposed to only letting the wealthy participate in government. In addition
to letting the minority have the vote, the Greek government also had laws
which protected the poor from persecution or disadvantage. This is one of
the areas where we are most like the Greeks. We have similar laws
pertaining to minorities, such as foreigners and women. We have laws such
as Affirmative Action and Anti-Discrimination Laws, which prevent people
from judging others based on race or social class.
