In the movie titled Over the Hedge directed by Tim Johnson and Karey Kirkpatrick the environmental issue of over population and consumption of natural land for human use is explored and addressed. In this movie, traveling raccoon con artist, RJ, arrives in a woods outside a human city in the Midwest, excited about the wonders that living near humans can bring hungry animals. What he finds, however, is an Amish-like community that is deathly afraid of humans, after their leader, Vern the tortoise, has an encounter with human boys that terrifies him for life. and are starting to be shipped off to the animal control center, when RJ comes to the rescue and saves them all from being captured. Though before the film reaches this point many common environmental issues are exposed. The main issue was the overuse of natural land for human purposes for things such as suburban neighborhoods that become the main topic of this detrimental destruction of land. The movie does a great job of showing how much land animals have to survive compared to how much land we have taken. They have their own knit-community behind the hedge, but just a few feet over it lies a whole community of suburban people living suburban lives. Cars, trash, watered grass, and animal traps are all shown to be obstacles for the animals in this film. Human activity is generally presented as a boon to the animals, that while suburban sprawl is destroying their forest home, the junk food that people consume and discard in copious amounts is a glorious trade-off.
