Over the top.

To my dearest sister lean and mother,

I have been here a weak but if feels like i was home yesterday. The time seems to run out for me. It is raining here. The water is right up to my knees. I can barely move. The trenches are like hell on earth, most loathsome. Even though we haven't gone over yet, I can feel the ominous death racing on me. The daunting memories of the past soldiers always alarm me of my situation. The atrocious sight of bodies everywhere makes me remorse. The sorrowful eye of my men weakens my hope. We have been told that it is going to be a walk over. The Germans have been shelled into the next life.

of death always surrounds us. My hands are shivering and giving me insane pain. Death is a constant companion for us sister. This might be the last time I could write to you. I may be lucky to join you for Christmas but the chances are very unlikely. At least I will be joining Papa. Many of my officers have died here on the first day in the trenches. It's so cold here that I can barely feel my bones. I can feel the cold blood running through my body. Tomorrow we will go over. This will be my last letter to you for some time.
