Parental Neglect and Irresponsibility

Sam believes his mother is a bad parent and is unfit to have a child. When pleading for his father to sue for custody, Sam explains that she “slept on the couch every night, sometimes with a cigarette still burning in her hand” (Schwartz 89) as well as not knowing how to cook or clean well. Sam is required to do these chores for himself, and is forced to be the adult in their relationship. If Sandra were not as inexperienced, unqualified, and disregardful, then Sam would not have tried to be in the custody of his father. “Where is it Written” would be a lot different if Sandra had not been this ignorant way towards Sam. In fact, if Sandra had known that she was being a bad mother and changed her ways, none of the story would have happened. Sam would be satisfied in the care of his mother. Sam would not have the opinion that his “mother would never change” (98) if she had known to put in the effort beforehand. A possible reasoning for Sandra acting the way she does ...
