People and Places

The places people live in affect who they are in a lot of different ways. It affects the culture they live in. Where ever they live, that's the "normal" that they will aim for. This theme is very common in House on Mango Street, in Farewell to Manzanar, and in mine and all of our everyday lives.
In House on Mango Street, Esperanza's environment and community she lives in affects her life in many ways. One example, is the house she lives in. In Farewell to Manzanar, Jeanne's environments and communities affect her life too. She moved many times, all influence who she was at the time. After Pearl Harbor, she moved to an all Japanese-American neighborhood. There, her culture adjusted to be more Japanese. Next, she moved to an internment camp. Here, she strives to be normal by taking lessons in dance, Odori, and baton twirling. She also becomes interested in Catholicism. Her next home is Long Beach, where she finds it very hard to be accepted and fit in because of her Japanese background. Her last childhood home is San Jose, where she strives to be popular by becoming extremely "American," and less and less Japanese. She ends up finally being accepted here, but realizes after winning Carnival Queen that she does not have to be just American or just Japanese, but can be both. She can be a Japanese-American.
