George Elliot said, “What greater thing is there for two human
souls than to feel that they are joined together to strengthen each other
in all labor, to minister to each other in all sorrow, to share with each
other in all gladness, to be one with each other in the silent unspoken
memories.” Both Marge Piercy’s “Simple Song” and John Donne’s “A Lecture
upon the Shadow” focus on the human desire to have someone to love and all
the obstacles that prevent a union from happening.

of a relationship because they want it to work so badly. “When
we are leaving someone we say: how strange you are we cannot communicate
we can never agree how hard, hard and weary to be together.”

When you are in a relationship that is ending, the smallest thing
bothers you about your significant other. You could suddenly decide that
the way they sneeze drives you absolutely crazy. You can pick a fight
about any conversation that comes up even if it is only a comment about
the weather. It is so hard to be together that you each begin to wonder
why you are still in the relationship and if its worth it anymore if it is
going to continue to be so hard.

The most important message in the poem comes in the third stanza.
Piercy writes about “reaching out clumsy hands.” Love is clumsy almost
in its definition. There have been few if there have been any people in
love who did not struggle, who did not stumble and make a few mistakes
