Plakatstil Poster Art

In creating my poster, "Popcorn", I aimed to combine the influences of Austin Cooper, in his 1924 poster for the London Underground, now on display in the London Underground Museum, and the Plakatstil (Poster Style) works of several European Plakastil pioneers, including Lucian Bernhard (Manoli Dandy c 1910); Hans Rudi Erdt (Nivea c 1910), and Niklaus Stoecklin (Internat Regatta, 1914). Another influence on my poster art was the later twentieth century works of Roy Lichtenstein (1923-1997), whose art perhaps best represents the post-Cubist pictorial style I sought to imitate to an extent within my poster.

while sitting "down below" a movie screen inside an AMC Theater, looking up at the movie screen and eating popcorn, using the word play for a similar effect. My own caption reads: POPCORN IS WARMER DOWN BELOW EATING IN COMFORT BY AMC THEATERS. In my choices of images and color scheme, I have done a sort of reversal of Cooper's original London Underground poster. Cooper's poster uses a montage of small cube-shaped images above his caption: blue at the very top, then red, then yellow, and then tan. His caption is written in red letters against that tan background. In my "Popcorn" poster, however, I begin with lighter, rounder-shaped images (not cubes or squares, but popcorn kernels), and then shade the popcorn kernels progressively darker until I reach the caption. I also "frame" my postet with alternating light and dark popcorn kernel images, in a variation of the way Cooper "frames" his poster with a juxtaposition of diagonally-shaped images of alternating sizes and ...
