Plants of the south are very big and showy. Big and bright plants in the south make life better. The bright showy flowers of Canna, Garden Geraniums, Camellia, Wisteria, Magnolia, Azaleas, and the big shady Live Oak, help make life a lot better in the South during the Great Depression by giving Southerners a sense of uplifting.

The best know Wisteria are Chinese, but American are just as good. Most people use them for crawling things to go over doorways and porches. Porches in the south were a very important place of the house. To have really colorful plants meant that it was a very happy place to be on warm summer night looking at all the different flowers. The really cool thing is the vibrant hanging masses of pea-like blue or violet flowers. One downfall of Wisteria is that if you happen to eat it, you get diarrhea (Wisteria 1).
A fragrance from a plant is very therapeutic to many people. Canna also has a very strong sent in addition to having large flowers.
