Being put into a mind of a genius to experience and understand what this man is going through is exactly what Mark Salzaman has done in his book The Soloist. At the age of six this musical genius, Renne, began playing the cello. Renne heard the cello for the first time and said, “I had to sing through the animals voice” (Salzman 4). At this very moment was the start of Renne’s musical career, where Renne was going to be the soloist of the cello, but as we see him growing he finally lost his unique talent. In school he was different from other kids because he loved music and he wasn’t that interested in playing sports, his mother forbidden him to play. She excluded him from contact with other children after he moved to Germany with Von Kempen. Renne was forced to be alone and that is all he knew. It must have been real rough to be alone constantly. He was scared to disobey his mother because he has been a soloist in the world and wouldn’t know how to handle other people. A good example of this fear is when Renne expresses himself when his mother said she was going to leave him. This was a truly solo decision because all other jury members had made up their minds with the guilty charge. At one time Renne wasn’t completely alone, but when that jury member changed his vote that made Renne’s lone vote much more difficult.
