Many people know Pocahontas from the Disney film that came out in 1995. Disney portrays her to be a carefree Indian girl who falls in love with an Englishmen named John Smith who had a dog named Percy. However, Percy was actually a colonist who followed John Smith around and wrote about their experiences. Therefore, it is clear to see that Disney made the movie Pocahontas solely for entertainment purposes. They left out a lot of very important details about Pocahontas’s life, such as her life as a child, the various men that came into her life, and her death.

As he was being held down and stretched out on a rock to be beaten alive, Pocahontas jumped in and lay her body over his to save him from death. Because of this, her father, Powhatan then declared that Smith was to be a friend to his people and even adopted Smith as his son, or subordinate chief. Relations with the English continued to be friendly for the next year, and Pocahontas frequently visited Jamestown, delivering messages from her father. Smith was in a gunpowder explosion and got so severely injured that he had to return to England. After Pocahontas’s next visit into town, she was told that Smith was dead, and she was greatly saddened. Shortly after however, she married an Indian man named Kocoum in 1610.
