Porphyrias Lover

"" is a poem by Robert Browning. Browning wrote the poem about one hundred years ago with the intention for it to be a dramatic monologue. A dramatic monologue is a poem uttered by one speaker, not the poet, but by a character being auto biographical at a critical moment. Also during the course of the poem the speaker should unintentionally reveal the key aspects of his or her character.
Through close reference to the poem I will comment on whether or not I feel Browning has achieved the intended affect.
The poem is about a female called Porphyria who is meeting with her Lover. I think she is already involved with or married to another, richer man and is having an affair with this ...

Porphyria is definitely in love with him, but seems to be too weak to act seriously on her feelings. Porphyria traveled at night in a storm to meet her Lover which shows that she is certainly interested and devoted to him.

I also think they are having an affair because the poem is called "Porphyria's Lover". It would explain why the relationship was so clandestine.

Her Lover was not sure if Porphyria truly loved him. When he discovered that she did he killed her so they would always be together.

Is the poem uttered by one speaker who is not the poet at a critical time?

Yes. The poem has only one speaker who is not the poet. It is the uninterrupted thoughts of Porphyria's Lover and is certainly uttered at a critical moment.

I think this is probably the most significant thing, ever in the Lovers life and will change him forever. He seems very lonely and desperately wants to be with Porphyria. He seems unsure if Porphyria really loves him. She was telling him she loved him ...
