The Holocaust was a terrible event that affected many people; Primo Levi was one of them. He was an Italian Jew captured and brought to the concentration camp Auschwitz in 1944. In his Survival in Auschwitz Levi describes and details his experiences during World War II. Though it can be said that the Nazis’ mass extermination of the Jews and others was one case of modern genocide eventually brought to an end, the continuance of modern genocide on a global scale, for example in Rwanda, shows that genocide during World War II was not history’s solitary case of large-scale slaughter and destruction of a race.
Levi’s book also explains methods for survival employed by him in the camp. He had to make strategic decisions that would benefit him overall. For example, he had the opportunity to trade Walter Bonn half a ration of bread for a knife, but Levi turned down the offer because he reasoned that someone would always lend him a knife while bread was harder to come by (Levi, 52).
