Prometheus and Hesiod as gods

Many Greek mythological gods or goddesses have interactions with humans and affect their daily lives. Demeter, the goddess of grains, controlled the seasons for humans. An important titan, Prometheus, helped mankind forever by giving fire to humans. Both Demeter and Prometheus sacrificed their time and their relationship with the supreme god Zeus in order to improve the lives of humans, which is rare among most gods. By giving humans the means to grow crops and being able to withhold meat from sacrifices, Demeter and Prometheus set themselves apart form most gods, and in that regard they can be considered as cultural gods.

Prometheus’s relationship with humans has a great cultural significance considering his gift of fire to humans. Prometheus risks his own well-being in order to trick Zeus into taking bones wrapped in fat, which gave humans the ability to keep the meat for themselves instead of having to sacrifice it to the gods. Hesiod writes,

“Zeus, most glorious and greatest of the eternal gods, take which ever of these portions your heart within you bids.' So he said, thinking trickery. But Zeus, whose wisdom is everlasting, saw and failed not to perceive the trick, and in his heart he thought mischief against mortal men which also was to be fulfilled.”
