Tyranny is most often defined as harsh, absolute power in the hands of one individual for example a king or a dictator. James Madison wrote that tyranny was the accumulation of all powers, in the same hands of one, a few, or many. The framers were afraid of tyranny because the British abused their power when they ruled the colonist. In order for the farmers to avoid tyranny they had a system of checks and balances. The system of checks and balances is basically each branch of the U.S can block the others from doing things it doesn't agree with.

and equal representation prevents tyranny. An example of that is in the constitution of the United States 1787 states that the House of Representatives use proportional representation. A big state like Massachusetts has eight representatives , New York six, New Jersey four and so on. In the senate they use equal representation, there is two representatives.
A second protection is the separation of powers. This protection is when a single person does not have all the power to make decisions. There is a distributed amount of power through the senate.
