Yekaterina Alexeevna aka Catherine II or most famously known as "Catherine the Great" was born in 1762 and died in 1796. She was raised as a princess in a Germanic state and wedded off to Peter III (1972) who was the tyrannical grandson of Peter the Great and heir to the Russian crown. She was very cruel and ended up assassinating Peter the Great and declared herself "Catherine tsarina of Russia". Her nephew succeeded to the throne as Peter III. Catherine the great went down in history as Russia's longest-ruling female leader.

Catherine and her husband Peter had a rough marriage and many believe that her eldest son Paul (born in 1754) was fathered by Sergi Saltykov, a Russian military officer. The two had extramarital affairs throughout the years and some historians believe that Paul was infertile. Some historians debate that this was a ploy to discredit Peter as a great ruler. Catherine had 3 children and I personally wonder if any of them are actually Peters.
There were many uprisings though out Catherine's rule, the most pertinent happened in 1773, when a group of Cossacks and peasants rebelled against the horrible living conditions of Russia's lower class (serfs).
