Racism In Apocalypse Now


Two different settings, in two different times, with one similar theme: Racism. Racism is clearly portrayed throughout Joseph Conrad’s, Heart of Darkness and Francis Ford Coppala’s, Apocalypse Now. Through the white man’s portrayal of the natives, overpowering the natives’ lives, and actions towards them, racism can be easily seen.
Racism can evidently be seen through the portrayals of the natives in both the novella and movie. In the movie it is not quite as apparent as the book but there are still some racist portrayals of the natives. As Captain Willard reaches the White American photographer, the American makes a remark about the natives, “Watch out those goddam monkeys ...

on whether the natives were as savage as everyone thought, but the outlooks of others did not change.
The native’s lifestyles are dramatically changed when the overpowering of white man dominate their land. The whites expected the natives to follow and comply with their demands once the natives’ homelands were invaded. This is because the whites considered themselves civilized and thought of the natives as savages. In Marlow’s description the white men found other means to make natives co-operate when they would not comply.
“Six black men advanced in a file…balancing small baskets full of earth on their heads…each had an iron collar on his neck, and all were connected together with a chain…Behind this raw matter one of the reclaimed, the product of the new forces at work, strolled despondently, carrying a rifle by its middle.”(Heart of Darkness, pg.24) The natives were forced to perform the white men’s tasks.
