Fitting In

Racism in Australia was extremely prevalent in the 1950’s, and Germans in particular were targeted due to them being on the opposite side of the War. “Fitting In” by Susan Midalia creates an environment of a 10 year old German girl, growing up in a racist Australian place. Susan has made the reader to dislike characters such as Vivienne Carter, who is unable to show kindness to many people who are different. We are expected to feel sad and helpless for Ester who is portrayed as a helpless person in the story.

The characters of Lorraine Best, Vivienne Cater and their friends are constructed as monstrous and malicious children who ‘caught her by the arm and pinned her in a bear hug and squeezed her so hard that Ester felt her insides red and burning’ and showed no remorse for their actions ‘ the coldness in her eyes and in heart’. The construction of the ‘cold’ and violent characters that represent the issue of racial discrimination positions me to strongly reject them.
