are considered two of the most influential and inspiring transcendentalist writers of their time. Both men extensively studied and embraced nature, and both men encouraged and practiced individualism and nonconformity. At first glance, one may conclude that these men's thoughts were parallel and their beliefs identical. But with careful study of their essays and poems, and understanding of the way in which they lived, Emerson and Thoreau become very different thinkers, with some very different thoughts and opinions.

It was after that move that Thoreau realized what had been missing in his life. "That woodland vision for a long time made the drapery of my dreams...Somehow or other it at once gave the preference to this recess among the pines...over that tumultuous and varied city, as if it (my spirit) had found its proper nursery" (Thoreau 252). About 23 years later, Thoreau moved into the forest to live alone in a small shack, and cut himself off from the rest of the world. It is here that he wrote "Walden" and many of his diary entries that were later published.
It is also here, in that forest just outside Concord, that Thoreau seemed to feel the best. He took a special joy in his long, solitary walks through the forest. He seemed to become a pert of the forest, and his well-being almost depended on it: "But I rely on my love for some things. Therein I am whole and entire" (Thoreau 248).
