Rappaccini’s Eden

“Rappaccini’s Daughter” is Nathaniel Hawthorne’s tale of a modern day Adam and Eve. Through his description of the setting and characters Hawthorne creates a feeling that places the reader in the familiar setting of the Garden of Eden. Hawthorne uses this ancient story to create his vision of love and to show the things that can go wrong. Through these small allusions, Hawthorne creates a masterful allegory.

Eden. Hawthorne, however, uses Lisabetta as an analogy to the angel with one slight twist: she is there to make sure that Giovanni finds his way into the garden. Lisabetta, realizing that Giovanni wishes to speak with Beatrice tells him, “There is a private entrance into the garden”(262).
To allude to the characters of the Bible, Hawthorne uses different devices. In creating God, Hawthorne creates the character of Rappaccini. Rappaccini is described as filled with such a wonderful energy that is almost overlooked his old and sickly demeanor (256). Baglioni describes Rappaccini as “A man who hold[s]…life and death in his hands…” (256), by using these descriptions Hawthorne gives Rappaccini an awesome powerful air of importance. This importance is intensified when his daughter, Beatrice, comes to join him in the garden.
