There are three major theories concerning the behavior of states in international relations; Realism, Idealism, and Marxism-Leninism. Realists believe in the concept of power and conflict, spurning suspiciously the idealistic view that moral principles and international law should be used to govern international politics. Idealists are in favor of a reliance on international organizations to be used as tools to promote the development of democracy in the world, eliminating the threat of war because history shows that democracies do not war against each other. was Hans Morganthau, author of, Politics Among Nations, coined the idea that states must seek to be the most important actor, seek to increase their power, and logically deduct the business of international relations. These three principles are the core of what Morganthau called “Political Realism.” While Realism may seem practical, it is not above criticism. Idealists point out that these policies may lead to an arms race, or increased inflation. Truth known political-leaders are motivated by political survival rather than the pursuit of power. A historical example of this thought pattern exists following World War II, decision-makers of this period came to the conclusion that an international community was not the answer to solving the dilemma of international peace. Instead they relied on the cold, hard facts concerning international relations in the world.
