The relationship between religion and the public health initiatives to combat the spread of HIV is oftentimes complex, variable and nuanced. This reality can especially be perceived when examining the many faith-based organizations (FBO) whose main purpose is HIV prevention and care. Historically religion has been seen to misunderstand the cause of an HIV infection and help perpetuate the idea that HIV infection is the wrath of God for individuals who have committed the sin of homosexuality. Typically many more conservative religions have beliefs and moral understandings especially regarding matters of sexual behavior. Oftentimes these beliefs are in abstinence only sex education are perpetuated by the belief that premarital sex is a sin.
