"The Longest Day" is an account of the D-Day invasion, told in the form of a novel. The book begins with the story of Field Marshall Erwin Rommel's attempts to thwart an invasion against the "Atlantic Wall" . Ryan describes Rommel's valiant effort to repulse enemy landings on the sea of the French coast that faced the Atlantic.
Throughout the novel, Ryan continues to interweave specific details of the battle on D-Day with engaging narratives about the soldiers facing the horror of D-Day. Most of the stories are about the brutality and heroism of war, but many focus on the unique humor of the battlefield.

Overall, Ryan's writing style is engaging and entertaining. He does become dry at points where he is delving deeply into military details, but this occurs relatively infrequently over the course of the book. He uses fairly simple, common language to convey the emotions and experiences of everyday soldiers during the invasion. The end result is an entertaining tale that is difficult to set down.
A large portion of the success of "The Longest Day" can be attributed to the subject matter of the work. The D-Day invasion is certainly fodder for a great deal of dramatic and interesting material. As such, Ryan's ability to make this book engaging and captivating is not surprising considering the wealth of material.
