After reading the whole article, I can divide the essay in five parts. The first part is 1,2 paragraph and the main thesis , James addresses the topic about language in this part. He wants us know that the language is the like the ID card of people, it can define and identify people. He states that language "also, far more dubiously, is meant to define the other--and, in this case, the other is refusing to be defined by a language that has never been able to recognize him.", from this sentence, I can easily catch the essence of his idea. The title of article is "If black English isn't a language, then tell me, what is? ". Although the main claim of this essay doesn't directly relate to the argument about black English, but it pave the way for the later discussion about black English. The second part of essay is 3,4 paragraph. James reinforce the main claim by using more examples this part. Loosing language is loosing identity, people always try to protect their own language, James states this argument by several examples.
