Robert Milikan

Robert Andrews Millikan was born on March 22, 1868 in Morrison, Illinois. His father was a minister and his mother was the dean of women at Olivet College in Michigan. He had two brothers and three sisters. Millikan lived during World War I. His family worked on a farm with a small salary. In his autobiography, Millikan said he enjoyed fishing as a child and actually learned nothing about science until young adulthood. His favorite subjects were Greek and Math. In 1902 Millikan married Greta Blanchard and had three sons named Clark Blanchard, Glenn Allen, and Max Franklin.

reasons why Millikan is famous is because he was the second American to receive the Nobel Prize in physics. This special award was earned in 1923. He used his "oil drop experiment" to determine the mass of an electron. According to author Jerry Frazee, “He observed the rise and fall of small drops of oil suspended between electrically charged metal plates. When he varied the charge on individual drops and measured their speed he noted that they rose and fell at either the same rate or at integral multiples of that rate. This confirmed that all electrons were alike and that each carried the same charge.” It took him several years to get his oil drop machine to work just right. As years went on he was able to get more and more accurate measurements.
