Robert Schumann


was a German composer during the Romantic era. He was born on June 8, 1810, the youngest child in his family (Slonimsky 902). Schumann was born in Zwickau, Germany (Stanley 147). His father sold books and was also a publisher and author (Sadie 831). Schumann’s father encouraged him but his mother disapproved of his interest in music (Stanley 147).
Schumann had an unhappy life. His sister, Emily, took her own life when she was 19. His father died at the age of 53 (Slonimsky 902). Schumann was 16 years old when his father died (Stanley 147). Many of his “idols” died at a young age or in “tragic circumstances” (Slonimsky 902).

This affected his speech and ability to move. He soon became apathetic (Sadie 848).
He became sick with depression and was affected by this most of his life (Stanley 147). In 1833 he became “deeply melancholic” as a result of the death of Rosalie, his sister-in-law. He even attempted suicide by trying to jump out of a “fourth-floor window” (Sadie 834-835).
Schumann eventually fell in love with the daughter of his piano teacher, Friedrich Wieck. Mr. Wieck did not approve of their relationship. Clara was 9 years younger than Schumann (Slonimsky 903). In 1839 Clara’s father imposed legal proceedings to keep her from marrying Schumann. These proceedings involved financial restraints (Sadie 837). They went to court in 1840 and all the proceedings were dropped except the charge that Schumann was a “heavy drinker” (Sadie 838). fascinating aspect of Schumann’s music was his ability to “personify his friends and intimates through musical acronyms” (Slonimsky 903). Schumann’s music reflected the times in his life. “He lived in musical fantasies, until his mental world became a fantasy itself “ (Slonimsky 903).
