Main character (1): Cassie Logan - The narrator and protagonist. Cassie is the Logan's 9 year-old child. She is a rather small wide eyed child of color. She has a fiery temper like her Uncle Hammer. She's very smart and knows more than her local trouble maker TJ. Also, she is very naive concerning the facts of racism.

mother is a school teacher who organizes a boycott of a white owned general store. She gets fired from the job when the store owners find out. The father works for the railroad and is gone a lot so that he can work. Cassie is the only girl of four children ages 6 to 12.

THEME

The main theme in this story is racism. The Logan family experience so incidents of injustice as they fight for equal rights and their land. Cassie is learning from a young age how to stand up for what she believes in. She learns not to let people treat her or, her family badly just because they are black. Her family is strong minded. Mr. and Mrs. Logan teach the children to respect themselves. Cassie learns to be cool headed and to think things through is a better, more successful way of getting the best results. This is displayed when Cassie tricks Lillian, (who has been awful to Cassie) into being her friend and then telling Cassie her secrets about her friends. Cassie then uses this ...
